Santa Monica is one of Southern California’s most popular coastal destinations, with visitors heading to the Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade, Downtown Santa Monica and the beach throughout the year.

But street parking in Santa Monica can be confusing.

Meters, residential permit zones, street sweeping, time limits and temporary restrictions can all affect whether a particular space is legal.

And there’s an important distinction for visitors to remember: Santa Monica is its own city. Its parking rules and enforcement are separate from those of the neighboring City of Los Angeles.

Here’s what to check before leaving your vehicle in Santa Monica.

1. How Does Street Parking Work in Santa Monica?

Santa Monica has a combination of metered street parking, residential streets, municipal parking facilities and beach parking.

Street regulations can change considerably from one block to another.

Before leaving your vehicle, check:

  • Meter operating hours and time limits.
  • Every parking sign affecting your space.
  • Residential permit requirements.
  • Street-sweeping restrictions.
  • Curb colors and loading zones.
  • Temporary No Parking notices.
  • Restrictions that begin later in the day.

An empty curb space doesn’t necessarily mean parking is permitted.

If several signs appear together, our guide to multiple parking signs explains how to approach overlapping restrictions.

2. How Do Santa Monica Parking Meters Work?

Metered parking is common in commercial areas of Santa Monica.

The rate, operating hours and maximum parking duration can vary depending on the location.

Always check the individual meter or posted information rather than assuming all Santa Monica meters follow the same schedule.

Paying a meter also doesn’t override another restriction.

For example, a meter may accept payment even though a separate restriction affects your intended parking period.

Before walking away, confirm both the payment requirements and the parking regulations.

Our guide to parking meter rules after hours explains why these are two separate things.

For current municipal parking information, visit santamonica.gov and search for Parking.

3. Is Street Parking Free in Santa Monica?

Some Santa Monica streets have unmetered parking, but “unmetered” doesn’t necessarily mean unrestricted.

A residential street might have a time limit, permit requirement or street-sweeping restriction.

Other streets may prohibit parking during particular hours.

Always read the signs on the specific block where you park.

If there’s no meter, your next question should be: What do the signs say?

Our guide to how to read parking signs can help when several rules apply.

4. What About Parking Near the Santa Monica Pier?

The Santa Monica Pier and surrounding beach area are among the busiest destinations in the city.

Visitors have access to municipal and beach parking facilities in the area, but street parking is also subject to local regulations.

If you choose a street space, check its meter hours, time limit and any restrictions that could begin while you’re at the beach or pier.

This is particularly important if you plan to stay for several hours.

A space that is legal when you arrive may not necessarily remain legal for your entire visit.

For current information about city-operated parking facilities and beach parking, visit santamonica.gov and search for Parking.

5. Parking Near Third Street Promenade and Downtown Santa Monica

Downtown Santa Monica has a mix of street meters and municipal parking structures.

If you park on the street, check the maximum permitted duration before beginning a long meal, shopping trip or entertainment activity.

Also look beyond the meter itself.

Loading zones, temporary restrictions and other signs can affect the same curb space at different times.

If your visit extends into the evening, verify whether the rules change before you return.

6. Do You Need a Residential Parking Permit in Santa Monica?

Some Santa Monica neighborhoods use preferential parking zones designed to manage parking on residential streets.

Signs identify when a permit is required and the hours when restrictions apply.

Visitors shouldn’t assume that an open residential space is available for unrestricted parking.

Read the posted permit restrictions carefully.

If you’re visiting a Santa Monica resident, the resident may be able to provide information about eligible guest or visitor parking options for their area.

Because Santa Monica administers its own permit program, don’t rely on a City of Los Angeles parking permit for a Santa Monica permit-restricted street.

7. Watch for Street-Sweeping Restrictions

Street sweeping is another common source of parking citations.

A residential street may ordinarily allow parking but prohibit it during designated cleaning hours.

Check the posted day and time before leaving your vehicle.

If you plan to park overnight, check the following morning as well.

And don’t assume that parking automatically becomes legal because a street sweeper has already passed.

The posted restriction determines when parking is permitted.

Read our guide to parking during street sweeping for more information.

8. What Do Santa Monica Curb Colors Mean?

Colored curbs communicate specific parking and loading restrictions.

Depending on the location, you may encounter areas designated for passenger loading, commercial loading, short-term activity or prohibited stopping and parking.

Don’t rely on color alone when accompanying signs provide additional restrictions.

Check the curb and nearby signs together.

This is especially important in busy commercial and beach areas where different curb uses may appear close together.

Our guide to parking curb colors explains the general meanings drivers should recognize.

9. Can You Park Overnight in Santa Monica?

Whether overnight street parking is allowed depends on the specific location and posted regulations.

A street may allow parking late at night but have an early-morning street-sweeping restriction, residential permit requirement or other limitation.

If you plan to leave your vehicle overnight, check the rules for the entire period it will remain parked.

Don’t evaluate only the restrictions in effect when you arrive.

Our guide to overnight parking rules explains what to check before leaving a vehicle until the following day.

10. Are Santa Monica Parking Rules Different From Los Angeles?

Yes.

Although Santa Monica borders Los Angeles, it is an independent municipality with its own parking programs and local regulations.

This matters because drivers can travel only a short distance and enter a different jurisdiction.

Venice, for example, is part of the City of Los Angeles, while neighboring Santa Monica is a separate city.

That means you shouldn’t assume the meter schedules, permit programs or other local parking rules are identical.

Always check the regulations for the jurisdiction where your vehicle is actually parked.

For comparison, see our Venice Beach parking guide.

11. Watch for Temporary No Parking Restrictions

Temporary parking restrictions may be introduced for construction, street maintenance, special events, filming or other activities.

These notices can temporarily change the normal parking rules on a street.

Before leaving your vehicle, look for temporary No Parking signs and check their effective dates and hours.

This is particularly important if you plan to leave your vehicle for several hours or overnight.

Our guide to temporary No Parking signs explains why temporary notices shouldn’t be overlooked.

12. What About Parking During Santa Monica Events?

Major events can affect traffic and parking conditions around Downtown Santa Monica, the beach and other popular areas.

Temporary restrictions, street closures or tow-away zones may be established before an event begins.

If you’re attending an event, review official event information before arriving and check the temporary signs once you reach your destination.

Never assume normal parking conditions remain unchanged simply because you’ve parked on the same street before.

Read our special event parking guide for additional precautions.

13. What if You Receive a Parking Ticket in Santa Monica?

First, check the citation itself.

Because Santa Monica is separate from Los Angeles, follow the payment or contest instructions provided by the City of Santa Monica rather than assuming Los Angeles procedures apply.

Review the alleged violation, deadline and instructions carefully.

If you believe a citation was issued incorrectly, document the parking location and relevant signs as soon as possible.

For current Santa Monica citation information, visit santamonica.gov and search for Parking Citations.

For general prevention strategies, see our guide to avoiding parking tickets.

14. Santa Monica Street-Parking Checklist

Before walking away from your vehicle:

  • Check the meter. Confirm payment hours and the maximum duration.
  • Read every sign. Don’t rely on one sign when several restrictions apply.
  • Look for permit requirements. Residential areas may have preferential parking restrictions.
  • Check street sweeping. Make sure the restriction won’t begin before you return.
  • Inspect the curb. Loading and other designated zones may have separate rules.
  • Look for temporary notices. Construction and events can change normal parking conditions.
  • Check your return time. Make sure the space remains legal for your entire visit.

If directional arrows make it unclear where a restriction begins or ends, see our guide to parking sign arrows.

15. How ParkClear Helps With Santa Monica Street Parking

Santa Monica demonstrates how quickly municipal parking regulations can change between neighboring jurisdictions and even between individual blocks.

ParkClear helps drivers interpret municipal street-parking regulations using parking-sign scanning and location-based information.

Future date and time checks can help you evaluate parking for a later period, while parking-expiration reminders can help you keep track of when your permitted parking time ends.

ParkClear doesn’t locate vacant parking spaces, reserve beach parking or provide turn-by-turn navigation.

Instead, it focuses on the question drivers need answered once they’ve found a potential street space:

Can I park here?

Enjoy Santa Monica Without the Parking Guesswork
